Q back to top Why VMware Ace
A

VMware ACE gives administrators the power to remotely deploy secure computing environment throughout to the whole enterprise network. IT departments are able to gain greater control of system environment lifecycles and company policies thereby protect valuable company assets.

Some of the ways in which VMware have benefited others:

  • Instead of notebooks with company standard configuration, brokers or sales teams apply ACE to build a locked down environment and distribute to remote colleagues for them to install and run on their own hardware.
  • Use ACE to control security builds within and external to your corporate network, associating the build ID with a hardened OS / application stack combination. Should vulnerabilities be discovered that is of sufficient severity, simply disable the ACE environment until newer hardened versions are deployed to remove the vulnerabilities.
  • Create ACE virtual machines for short-term employees or contractors to install and run for the duration of the employment. Restricting access to physical devices, such as floppy or hard disks through policies can be easily set.

Q back to top Why use VMware's VIN (Virtual Infrastructure Node) and what are its benefits?
A

VMware Virtual Infrastructure Node (VIN) takes modules from the award-winning VMware packages and bundles them together into a fully virtualized server environment. The following benefits are gained when you use VIN.

  • Greatest value for money when deploying virtual centre as compared to other packages available on the market.
  • Allow the ulitilisation of another great application, Vmotion. Vmotion allows easy virtual machine migration.
  • The ability to create multiple CPU virtual machines using the Virtual SMP product.
  • Best of all, it allows extra flexibility and ease of management within the ESX server farm using the Virtual Center environment.

Q back to top How can Virtual Center help you?
A

VMWare Virtual Centre gives you a centralized interface to manage your entire virtual infrastructure. It gives you single point of management for ESX servers / PlateSpin and virtual machines providing for a central VM template repository, and publication of location across the whole ESX server / PlateSpin farm. Overall, it reduces your costs in time and effort in the operation of your whole IT infrastructure.

ESX Server vs. VirtualCenter
ESX Server without VirtualCenter with VirtualCenter
Separate Remote Console and Management Interface per ESX Server (Host) Centralized Management Interface and Integrated Remote Console
Manual VM Provisioning Built-In VM Provisioning Process
Manual Cold VM Migration across Hosts Built-In Facility to Cold Migrate VMs
No Support for Hot VM Migrations VMotion (Support for Hot VM Migrations)
Management Interface for Statistics Virtual Machine Dashboard for Statistics
Automation via scripting and cron Scheduled Tasks and Alarms
Individual accounts per Host Unified Login (via vpx)
Unix User/Group Permissions Security Roles (Active Directory, Windows Domains)

Q back to top The flexibility of ESX
A
  • Vmotion provides the ability to move virtual machines across ESX servers without interruption to the end user.
  • Future releases of ESX will provide frameworks for clustering across the ESX server farm.
  • Online resource reallocation or resizing within a virtual machine to allow for varying workloads.
  • Ability to utilise different hardware platforms across sites as ESX abstracts the OS from the physical hardware.
  • Ability to make a copy of a running system and then utilise that copy for debug or testing purposes on any of the VMware products (workstation, PlateSpin or ESX).

Q back to top Disaster Recovery with VMware
A

Disaster recovery (DR) sites are mandatory for businesses operating in today's demanding environment. TAS can implement VMware as a cost-effective solution for DR. The number of physical servers required will greatly reduce. In addition, TAS can ensure that the dynamic data content in production can be replicated with SAN synchronisation, restored via tape backup or conversion of a backup image of the production server into a virtual machine. Benefits include:

  • Minimal downtime for production
  • Smaller recovery windows required for DR
  • Removal of requirements for software licensing at the DR site for virtual machines
  • Ease of management and control over the DR environment
  • Reduced system administration allowing staff to concentrate on production
COMPARING BACKUP TECHNIQUES
From Guest OS From Service Console
Allows incremental, differential backup Full disk image only, including system files
Application data can be archived without shutdown VM power-off required
Archived system data can only be restored into a running VM Easy to boot a restored virtual disk
Must install agent software in each VM May need Service Console disk space for exported disks
Best for application data Best for system image

Q back to top What time do classes begin?
A The majority of our classes run from 9am - 5pm. As there may be some exceptions, please check your confirmation email or our website. This information can be found in the course details.

Q back to top What can students expect from class?
A Students will work in teams of two on servers, Class is approximately a 50/50 mixture of lab and lecture. Approximately 1/2 of the labs that will be provided are considered "optional". Even so, the class is generally tight from a scheduling standpoint. Lunch vouchers will be provided for near by eaterys.
